Early dolls were made at home of wood, clay, rags or bone. The better dolls were made of wax. In the 1300's paper mache was used in making dolls. With the previous materials along with paper mache there was little change in making dolls for the next 200 years. In the 1600's faces were made smoother, eyes were now able to move and lady dolls became very desired After 1710 leather was used to make doll bodies and many of these dolls had wax heads. In the 19 century doll making made a major leap to new materials dolls were now made of china, porcelain, bisque along with metal, composition and celluloid. Vulcanized rubber was also introduced into the doll making world. Dolls started to look like babies instead of ladies. During the war in the 30's doll companys were forced to make eyes cheaper because of war shortages The eyes on dolls of this period have not withstood time and many are found crazed and cracked a good example is the Shirlry Temple doll If you have trouble dating your doll look at the eyes. Tin eyes were before the 30's. Many of the the antique bisque, wax, some tin heads dolls have glass eyes. In the 1930's fully jointed composition dolls were very popular and much desired. Rooted hair became the new rave in the 1950's.Before the rooted hair wigs of human hair and mo hair were used. Human hair was discontinued due to illness spreading,as it was thought, through the doll hair to children. Rubber and celluloid gave way to a new laytex material in the late 40's and early 50's This material did not hold up very well, it was easy to tear and now if one is found in good condition it is a rare find. The dolls were feeling like real skin and looked like real babies, This product made way toward plastic. Dolls were mass produced in hard plastic in the 50's. From there vinyl was the new norm for dolls and is still being used and becoming softer and softer to make dolls feel, move and look like human skin. Although there are many other factors to date your doll I hope this guide will help you to determine the age of your doll.
