ABSTRACT Holy Catherine of Siena (1347–80) was canonized partly due to her excessive fast. For years she was, according to the historical sources, nourished only by the Lord's Supper. ![]() She died thirty-three years old of emaciation and malnutrition. She is a central figure among holy anorexics in the late Middle Ages. This paper presents a brief biographical sketch as a fundament for discussing how self-starvation and self-harm as bodily practices may be understood respectively with reference to the social and religious contexts of the Middle Ages, and with reference to contemporary psychological contexts. Using a phenomenological approach, there is an emphasis on both similarities and differences. The paper proposes a basic community in psychological functioning, with particular emphasis on interactions of body and mind. Whilst there are obvious differences in ascribed meanings to bodily behaviours, the holy anorexic could legitimize her extreme fasting practices, asceticism and by referring to God.
